–Walter Clarence Bender, Jr. “Wally” 89 of Paso Robles, passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 succumbing to diabetes. Born Dec. 7, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, he is survived by daughter Cheryl Jeanne Albertelli (Ray) from marriage to Yvonne, granddaughter Jennifer Rose Ann Johnson, great-granddaughter Presley Monroe, of Atascadero; daughter Heide Lisa Cabrera (Erwin) from second wife Carol Marie (nee Rose Marie Warfel/Arthur), grandsons Brett Tomas, Adam Walter, granddaughters Mariah Ruth, Katie Ann, of Wauconda, IL; daughter-in-law Suzan (Birdsey) Bender, granddaughter Tonya Bender-Mullowney (Lee), great-grandsons Francis Xavier, Phoenix, of Ontario, Canada; Also survived by Carol Marie, step-children Paul Arthur Garmisch, Linda June Kelsall (Steve), Richard Carl (Laura), Peter Charles (Elizabeth), 12 step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren. Predeceased by parents Walter Clarence and Eugenia Alexandria (nee Rogers) Bender, first wife Yvonne (nee Conger) Hammerly, son Walter Clarence Bender, Jr., sister Geraldine Susanne Kreutzfeld, one step-granddaughter.

Wally served briefly in the Naval Reserve in 1944, studied Industrial Arts at Arizona State University (Tempe) where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and percussionist in the fraternity’s Jazz Jamboree. Wally owned and operated two businesses in his lifetime, Arlington Heights Garden Inc. and A-1 Lock & Key in McHenry, IL. He worked 18 years for the United States Postal Service in Arlington Heights and Crystal Lake, IL, and was a greeter at the YMCA in Aurora, IL before retiring to California.

Over the years he performed percussion and vocals at social events, gardened, travelled across the US and Canada, fished, rode motorcycles, flew as a licensed private pilot, volunteered in the Civil Air Patrol, served as an election judge, collected stamps and coins, and enjoyed fishkeeping. He immersed himself in the Paso Robles community where he participated in veteran and political events. Wally had long-time friendships until the end of his days through his lengthy involvement in online chat groups. He proactively professed his faith in Jesus Christ, and shared life lessons with all.
