A 35-year-old Paso Robles woman tragically died Thursday afternoon when her husband’s truck hit her in a parking lot accident, according to a California Highway Patrol report and local sources.

At about 4 p.m. Jana Carlson was talking with her husband, Kenneth “KC” Carlson, 38, at Broken Earth Winery, where she works as an assistant tasting room manager. He was in a Ford F350 pick up truck and she was standing outside of her car speaking to him, the CHP report says. After the conversation ended, she walked in front of his parked vehicle, the report says.

She bent over to retrieve something on the ground and her husband’s vehicle advanced forward and struck her. She suffered blunt force trauma. Life saving procedures were initiated but Jana succumbed to her injuries at Twin Cities Hospital, CHP reports.

“He is devastated,” says a family friend who asked not to be identified.  “He is not even functioning. Jana was such a good mom and wife. She was always happy. She was so genuine.”

The couple lived together in Paso Robles with four children ages 15, 11, 7 and 4. The family attends Highlands Church in Paso Robles. In addition to working in the winey, Jana worked in the childcare area at Kennedy Club Fitness.

Local resident Jennifer Sorenson started a Facebook page “Help for the Carlson Family“, to offer help and support for the family. The page is filled with sorrowful tributes to the Carlson family and offers for help. “All gifts & gift cards can be dropped off at the Paso Robles Sports Club on Union Rd. Thank you for all the love and support for the family in their time of need,” Sorenson writes.

A special fund, “The Jana Carlson Memorial Fund”, has been set up at Chase bank for anyone who would like to help the family financially.

Broken Earth Winery says on its Facebook page, “Due to a tragedy at the winery today, we will be closed until Monday. Thank you for understanding.”
