Women’s march in San Luis Obispo slated for Jan. 21

womens-march-slo

–Women, men and children who wish to stand for women’s rights, human rights, civil liberties, diversity and compassion will have an opportunity to march together in San Luis Obispo, on Jan. 21, 2017—the day after the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump. March organizers say they hope to “send a powerful message to our new administration, on their first day in office, that women’s rights are imperative for our nation’s unification.”

The march will start at 10 a.m. in front of the SLO County Courthouse.

The Women’s March San Luis Obispo is organized by private citizens, in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, which is expected to rally hundreds of thousands from across the United States. Together the Washington March and regional marches such as the one in San Luis Obispo have become a nationwide movement. The SLO march is one of seven such events planned in California, and the only one between San Jose and Los Angeles. The local march is an opportunity for people in San Luis Obispo and surrounding communities to come together to share in a common hope for women’s rights under the new administration. It is also a display of support for communities who may be afraid or without a voice, to express that they have local allies. Organizers say this will be a peaceful march, not a protest.

Women’s March in San Luis Obispo – Mission Statement:

On Jan. 21, 2017, we will unite in San Luis Obispo to show support for the Women’s March on Washington. We stand together in solidarity with our friends, families, and women everywhere, for the protection of women’s rights, safety and health; and to look forward to a positive future. This nationwide march will send a powerful message to our new administration, on their first day in office, that this is the first step towards unifying our Nation’s diverse communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We work peacefully and inclusively, while recognizing there is no true peace without equity for all.
