Another pedestrian crosswalk pole struck by vehicle

–Late July 4th or early July 5th a vehicle apparently struck a pole erected for the lighted pedestrian crosswalk across 13th Street at Park Street. It’s the second time during construction that a vehicle has struck one of the poles, which are set in islands in the middle of 13th Street. The poles are intended to hold lighted safety warning lights which will protect pedestrians crossing 13th at Pine and Park, between Spring Street and the 13th Street Bridge.

Both accidents left the pole bent at a conspicuous angle. The first time it occurred, the pole at 13th and Pine had to be extracted.

Paso Robles resident Gene Richards saw the bent pole Friday. He said, “It looks like a large truck may have struck the pole. Out in the middle of the street like that, I fear those poles are vulnerable to repeated accidents.”

Motorists are advised by the city to drive carefully through the pedestrian crosswalk construction zone. As CalTrans says, “Slow for the cone zone.”
