Bearcat seniors awarded $1 million in scholarships

Mathew Olsen was awarded a scholarship to the US Air Force Academy.

–More than 100 Paso Robles High School (PRHS) seniors were awarded an estimated $1 million in scholarships at the June 8 Scholarships Awards Night. Over 200 scholarships for scholastics, career studies, athletics and theater were awarded from 61 grantors. Awards from local organizations totaled $250,000. Locally awarded scholarships came from a number of local organizations including Cuesta College, Cal Poly, The Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo, The Paso Robles Downtown Association, The Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce Women in Business, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimists, Elks and Lions clubs, plus businesses and family foundations.

The United States Air Force Academy awarded a $400,000 scholarship to Matthew Olsen. Matthew Horne received a $200,000 scholarship to West Point. Johnathan Russell received a $34,000 scholarship to Universal Technical Institute as the result of winning silver and gold medals at the SkillsUSA competition.

“The students that applied for scholarships this year were top notch.” PRHS Career and College Counselor Heather Gillis said. “I can’t imagine a better way to send our students off to college. I would like to thank the grantors for their generosity and support. Without them, Scholarship Night would not be possible.”

Gillis said several organizations continued to pull together scholarship funds even after their initial scholarships were awarded. “There is nothing better than getting a phone call or email saying we’ve pulled together more funds and we want to support another student.”
