Caltrans to detour cyclists on Hwy 46 East

highway 46 bridge

Construction on Hwy 46 causing bicycle detour for months

Caltrans will close a section of Hwy. 46 East to bicyclists traveling in the eastbound direction from Union Road to Whitley Gardens Drive beginning Tuesday night, Dec. 3 at 8 pm. The highway will remain fully open for motorists traveling in both directions.

This excavation work near the new Estrella River Bridges will result in the installation of protective barrier on the shoulder of the highway which will prevent access for bicycles. Bicyclists traveling eastbound will detour at Jardine Road before returning to Hwy. 46 at Estrella Road. This 24/7 detour is expected to be in effect for approximately three to four months. This road work will not affect cyclists traveling in the westbound direction.

Electronic message boards and detour signs will assist motorists and cyclists in the Whitley Gardens area. The contractor for this $47 million dollar five mile widening project from Geneseo Road to Almond Drive is Papich Construction of Pismo Beach.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones. For traffic updates on other state highways in San Luis Obispo County, motorists can call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318 or can visit the District 5 website at: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/road_information.htm
