Cuesta College named a military-friendly school
Cuesta College was recently designated a 2015 Military Friendly School by Victory Media, a company that connects the military and civilian worlds. The Military Friendly Schools designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
“Cuesta College recognizes that those who serve in the military are highly skilled individuals with proven leadership skills,” said Dr. John Cascamo, Cuesta College dean of economic workforce and development and Air National Guardsman. “Our goal is to help these men and women translate their military experience into a college degree or certificate so they can advance in the civilian workforce and bring their talents back to their communities. Being designated a Military Friendly School validates the ongoing work of Cuesta College to support our veterans.”
Cuesta College currently serves more than 700 veterans annually and has a dedicated Veterans Resource Center on the San Luis Obispo Campus, where veterans can learn about available benefits, connect with one another, work on coursework and become active in other aspects of campus life.
“The Veterans Resource Center is one of the best things at Cuesta College,” said veteran and Cuesta College student Matthew Lozano. “Not only does it provide lots of resources, the staff is always willing to help and you can tell they actually care about what they are doing for veterans, which makes it feel like a community.”
Cuesta College also offers free parking permits to veterans through the “Mike” program, in honor of former Cuesta College student and Army National Guardsman Mike Mihalakis, who was killed in 2003 while serving in Iraq.
Now in its sixth year, the Military Friendly Schools designation and list by Victory Media is the premier, trusted resource for post-military success. Military Friendly provides service members transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.
