District Attorney-elect Dow appoints Cunningham as assistant DA
San Luis Obispo County District Attorney-elect Dan Dow announced today the appointment of deputy district attorney and former police officer, Lee Cunningham to the position of assistant district attorney.
Since 1971, Cunningham has worked to increase the level of safety in San Luis Obispo County. His diverse career that has now spanned nearly 40 years began as a correctional officer with the California Men’s Colony. Shortly after, he was hired by the San Luis Obispo Police Department, and while serving as an officer, Cunningham enrolled and graduated from law school.

“Our office is fortunate to possess a tremendous talent base of well-qualified and highly respected attorneys,” said District Attorney-elect Dow. “But as we implement changes to make our County a safer place to live, work, and raise a family, I’m confident that Lee’s background in both the legal and law enforcement fields, experience in the courtroom, and exemplary reputation make him the most qualified member of our office to serve in this capacity.”
Hired by the San Luis Obispo County DA’s office in 1985, Deputy District Attorney Cunningham immediately earned recognition from his superiors and the respect of his peers. Cunningham’s commitment both inside and outside of the courtroom has allowed him to work in nearly every aspect of the department and systematically rise through the ranks. In his most recent assignment before earning the appointment to assistant district attorney, Cunningham was serving as a felony prosecutor where he conducted several trials to murder convictions.
As longtime District Attorney Gerry Shea recently announced that his retirement was set for Thursday, Nov. 6, next month will mark the beginning of a new era for the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s office.
