Driver loses control of vehicle, crashes into house

Driver was found to be under the influence of drugs and in ‘no condition to operate a motor vehicle safely’

–Authorities have arrested 51-year-old Marlinda Ann Croom of Atascadero on suspicion of drunk driving after she lost control of her vehicle on Monday while attempting to navigate a turn on El Camino Real in Santa Margarita and came crashing into a house.

A deputy from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office was traveling northbound on El Camino Real from Santa Margarita when a white Dodge Durango Durango traveling in the opposite direction crossed into his lane. The deputy made a U-turn in order to catch up to the vehicle. The driver continued into Santa Margarita in the opposing lane and was unable to negotiate the curve at Highway 58 safely. The driver made an unsafe turning movement, losing control of the vehicle. The vehicle skidded across both lanes of Highway 58 and collided with a wood picket fence. The vehicle continued sideways, out of control, through two front yards finally colliding with a house. No one in the house was injured. The driver was identified as 51-year-old Marlinda Ann Croom of Atascadero.

Croom was detained by the deputy as officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and handled the investigation to a conclusion. Croom was found to be under the influence of drugs and in no condition to operate a motor vehicle safely, police say. She was placed under arrest and transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. She was later booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail for suspicion of drunk driving.
