Update Feb. 26, 2014: The fire at the Paso Robles Event Center Monday night was started by an electrical equipment failure in a maintenance shed, according to CAL Fire investigators. It turned out to be battery chargers that started the fire, according to reports. The structure and its contents are a total loss.

Original story Feb. 25: The night sky over Paso Robles filled with the acrid smell of smoke Monday as a fire burned in the heart of town. At about 8:45 p.m., the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services responded to a fire at the Paso Robles Event Center, home of the California Mid-State Fair. The first fire engine arrived at 8:51 p.m. and reported 25-percent fire involvement of a 50′ x 100′ foot metal building located at the north-east corner of the property. The building housed maintenance equipment.

The fire was contained at 10:01 p.m. A total of 31 firefighters and three chief officers were required to fight the fire. In addition to the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, Atascadero, SLO County Fire/CAL FIRE, and Templeton fire departments responded to assist. San Luis Ambulance Service additionally responded.

The building remains standing. Firefighters remained on-scene for several more hours in order to ensure that all fire has been extinguished.

There were no livestock on the grounds at the time of the incident. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Fire dollar loss was not established. Fire cause and exact origin investigation responsibility were turned over to CAL FIRE, because it is state-owned property.
