Gang resistance education summer camps held for kids 

Sheriff’s Office hosting summer camps to educate youth about the dangers of gangs

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 6.19.36 AMBecause of high demand, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its popular GREAT summer camps. GREAT means Gang Resistance Education and Training. This year there will be four GREAT camps for elementary and middle school children.

The first will be held June 17 through 21 at Lillian Larsen Elementary School in San Miguel. The GREAT program is a violence prevention program taught by trained law enforcement officers.

The summer camps are free and provide fun activities and games while teaching children how to avoid taking part in bullying, violence and gangs. On June 17, Sheriff Ian Parkinson will be there at 9 .m. to welcome all the kids to the camp.

Here are the dates and locations for the following GREAT summer camps:

  • June 17-21, Lillian Larsen Elementary School, San Miguel
  • June 24-28, Cayucos Elementary School, 301 Cayucos Dr, Cayucos
  • July 8-12, Vineyard Elementary School, 2121 Vineyard Dr, Templeton
  • August 5-8, Mesa Middle School, 2555 S Halcyon Rd, Arroyo Grande
