Girl Scouts donate pennies for city park

Girl-ScoutsGirl Scouts from Troop 920, based at Georgia Brown Elementary School in Paso Robles, collected pennies during the school year to help re-build the Paso Robles Downtown City Park playground. The scouts presented a check for $200 from the pennies they collected to the Paso Robles REC Foundation during the Concerts in the Park series on Friday evening.

The REC Foundation is working to raise $350,000 in private donations to finance construction costs of a new playground. The foundation raises money at the Concerts in the Park series on Friday evenings during the summer. As of June, the group has raised $66,049 towards the goal, including a $10,000 donation from Justin Vineyards.

The Downtown City Park Playground area was last upgraded in 1980 and is in desperate need of renovation. The playground structures have deteriorated through the years. For generations, the Downtown City Park has served as an important nexus for the community by hosting numerous annual festivals, sporting events, farmers markets, and informal family gatherings.

In June 2012, the Paso Robles City Council voted unanimously to authorize an ad hoc committee composed of REC Foundation directors and two Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee members to raise funds for this purpose.
