GIS Day hosted by local geography enthusiasts
The San Luis Obispo Geographic Information System (GIS) User Group is celebrating GIS Day Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at the San Luis Obispo Public Library. GIS Day is free, and will include a map gallery and exhibits by local professionals working in academia, government, and private industry.
Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 17–21 in 2014, GIS Day is a global event to raise awareness of geographic information system technology and the important contributions it makes in many aspects of society. SLO GIS Day provides an opportunity for students, professionals, and the public to see real-world examples of how GIS is used in San Luis Obispo.
A GIS is a computer-based system designed to capture, store, and analyze geographic data. With these tools users can query, measure, and visualize geographic data providing a powerful platform for understanding the world around us. GIS is used by planners, scientists, engineers, emergency responders, and many others, including the public, to navigate our world and to make timely and informed decisions.
