Governor Edmund G. Brown Wednesday announced the appointment of San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson to the Alfred E. Alquist Seismic Safety Commission.

The commission investigates earthquakes, researches earthquake-related issues and reports, and recommends to the governor and legislature policies and programs needed to reduce earthquake risk.

Among the duties of the commission are reviewing seismic activities funded by the state, proposing and reviewing earthquake-related legislation, conducting public hearings on seismic safety issues, recommending earthquake safety programs to governmental agencies and the private sector, and investigating and evaluating earthquake damage and reconstruction efforts following damaging earthquakes.

“I’m honored to have been chosen by Governor Brown to serve on this all-important commission,” said Parkinson, “It’s a simple fact of life, if you live in California you have to live with earthquakes. This appointment is a reflection of our work on the Sheriff’s Public Safety Task Force to make San Luis Obispo County the most prepared county in the nation for disaster preparedness. And now I can take that message to the state level so that all Californians can be better prepared when the next quake strikes.”

The Governor’s Office released this announcement today, “Ian Parkinson, 49, of San Luis Obispo, has been appointed to the Alfred E. Alquist Seismic Safety Commission. Parkinson has served as sheriff-coroner of the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office since 2011. He served as police captain for the City of San Luis Obispo from 1988 to 2011 and was a police officer for the City of Morro Bay from 1984 to 1988. Parkinson has been a member of the California State Sheriffs Association since 2011. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Parkinson is a Republican.”

The appointment to the Seismic Safety Commission is a 4-year term.
