Highway 46 East widening project through Shandon completed

–The widening of Hwy. 46 East from McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown Road through Shandon has been completed, according to Caltrans.

“I am very pleased that we have completed another segment of widening this important east-west corridor. This project will result in a safer trip for the thousands of people who travel along Highway 46 East.” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

The widening of this segment of Hwy 46 East follows three completed phases from Paso Robles to the Hwy. 46/41 intersection. The $38 million widening of Hwy. 46 East from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road was completed in 2016. The widening of Hwy. 46 from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive was completed in 2014 while the widening of Hwy. 46 from Airport Road to Geneseo Road wrapped up in 2010.

The contractor for this $47 million project was Brosamer & Wall of Walnut Creek Calif. The next phase of widening is another 5-mile segment of Hwy. 46 East from the Shandon Rest Area to Cholame is expected to begin in the spring of 2020.

“With the completion of this phase and the anticipated work out to Jack Ranch Café, the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) Board of Directors is excited to see the efforts continued out to the intersection at the 41/46 Wye and eventually to the Kern County Line,” said SLOCOG Executive Director Peter Rodgers.

Eventually, Highway 46 will become a 4-lane divided expressway from US 101 in Paso Robles to I-5 in Lost Hills in Kern County.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones. For traffic updates on other state highways in San Luis Obispo County, motorists can call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318.
