BookPlates!-

Local and national artists step up to the plate for the Paso Robles Library

The Paso Robles Library Foundation will host its 3rd annual artist and celebrity plate gala auction fundraiser, BookPlates!, at the Paso Robles City Library on Saturday, Nov, 22, from 6-9 p.m. This unique event will feature the work of over 45 locally and nationally known artists using large size square ceramic plates – BookPlates! – as the canvases or base for their creations. A wide array of submissions make this unique signature event a must for local art lovers.

Tickets include entrance into the gala auction as well as a grazing menu created by wine country chef Jeff Wiesinger with wine and beer by J Lohr and Firestone. Entertainment will be provided by the band Human Nation known for their upbeat Brazilian funk and jazz tunes. Tickets may be purchased online at www.prlibraryfoundation.org/bookplates-2014 or at the Paso Robles Library circulation desk and are $40 per person. This is a 21 and older event.

The main focus of the evening will be the artist plate auction. Each plate makes a statement, with many of them depicting one of the artist’s favorite books or literary characters. Offerings range from a submission by central coast resident and nationally syndicated cartoonist Jerry Scott (creator of the comic strip Zits) to a fused and dichroic glass plate that brings to mind a disco ball created by Atascadero artist Bryn Bridenthal as a tribute to her time spent touring with the English rock band Queen. Bridenthal was a part of Freddie Mercury’s entourage and is mentioned in Peter Freestone’s book Freddie Mercury. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the selection of plates submitted for this year’s event,” said Karen Christiansen, Paso Robles City Library Manager. “Artists were asked to contribute on an invitation only basis, leading to an elite and beautiful variety of expressions with artists represented from all over California and the United States. From hand painted BookPlates! to sculpted paper creations, mosaic to fused glass, the BookPlates! featured in this year’s event are truly amazing one-of a kind creations.”

Proceeds from BookPlates! support programs and improvements at the Paso Robles City Library. Since 1997, the Paso Robles Library Foundation has raised over $500,000 to augment the library budget for the City of Paso Robles. Spending is focused on expanding the collection, programs for adults and children, and helping the Paso Robles community keep pace with a changing world.

Place a bid even if you can’t attend

For the first time this year you may place a bid on a plate even if you can’t attend the BookPlates! event. After viewing the plates on the Paso Robles Library Foundation Facebook page, email your bid to Library Manager and event chair Karen Christiansen at KChristiansen@prcity.com or (805) 237-3870. Of course the best way to ensure winning the plate is to attend the event so as not to be outbid, but if that’s not possible, your emailed bid will be placed as the starting bid for the plate on the night of the BookPlates! event. Many of the plates available for auction this year will be on display at the Paso Robles City Library beginning Monday, November 10th to be viewed in person.
