Local assemblyman named ‘Legislator of the Year’ by California Association of LAFCOs

In recognition of Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian’s consensus-based commitment to empowering local communities, the California Association of Local Agency Formation Commissions announced it has named him its 2014 Legislator of the Year.

“I strongly believe that government works best when it’s closest to the people, and that is why I am pleased to have been honored by an association that helps promote responsible local government,” said Achadjian, who is chair of the State Assembly’s Local Government Committee. “Working with a diverse group of stakeholders, we have been able to pass bipartisan solutions to address challenging issues at the local level. I look forward to building on this progress in the near future when the new Legislature is sworn in.”

In their nomination papers, the San Luis Obispo County Local Agency Formation Commission mentioned Assemblyman Achadjian’s experience as a LAFCO Commissioner and three-term County Supervisor as a reason to nominate him for this honor. They also mentioned Achadjian’s ability to build consensus and that he is a strong proponent of working with others to solve problems for the community he represents.

CALAFCO also honored Assemblyman Achadjian for two pieces of legislation that he shepherded through the Legislature this year. First, AB 2156, will assist with the formation and oversight of local agencies. Achadjian also carried AB 2453, which creates a hybrid governance structure to assist local governments in addressing critical water issues in the Paso Robles Basin.

Achadjian was honored as CALAFCO’s Legislator of the Year at its annual business meeting last week.

Assemblyman Achadjian represents all of San Luis Obispo County and part of Santa Barbara County, including the cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Paso Robles, Grover Beach, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, and surrounding communities.
