Local college applicants encouraged to apply for Laura’s Legacy Scholarship

Those impacted by cancer in their life encouraged to submit essay

–With scholarship season in full swing, the caring staff and volunteers of Cancer Support Community-California Central Coast have announced the establishment of the Laura Legacy’s Scholarship in honor of Laura Coats. San Luis Obispo County high school seniors or adult re-entry students with plans to attend college or vocational school for the Fall 2018 semester are encouraged to apply.

Are you a cancer survivor? Has your life been impacted by a family member’s battle with cancer? Write and submit an essay about your experience by May 4 for the chance to win a $1,500 or $500 Laura’s Legacy Scholarship.

“This is the first year of the Laura’s Legacy Scholarship, and her legacy gift will enable us to perpetuate this award to local students for many years,” said CSC Executive Director Shannon D’Acquisto. “Laura and her husband Thom were two of the founders of Cancer Support Community in SLO County, and this scholarship program was made possible by their generous gift, from the Laura Coats and Thom Schulz Memorial Trust. This scholarship is a great fit because Laura had such a passion for Cancer Support Community, for philanthropy, and for being an educator.”

“Laura was a beloved teacher and philanthropist who had a soft spot for the Cancer Support Community and for education,” said D’Acquisto. “We are honored to support her legacy by offering the opportunity to be awarded a scholarship. As an English teacher who was loved by many, we could not think of a better way to honor Laura than by offering a scholarship in her name to extend the education of others.”
