SLO wineries release special vintage for charity
Talley Vineyards with the help of other wineries released the 2015 Mano Tinta wine in support of The Fund for Vineyard and Farm Workers
—Talley Vineyards released its 2015 vintage of a charity wine, Mano Tinta, on April 22, 2018. Meaning “Red Hand” in Spanish, the name Mano Tinta was chosen to signify the pride and commitment of farm workers to their craft. All of the grapes, materials and services used to make Mano Tinta are donated by the community. Sinor LaValle Vineyards, Ranchita Canyon Vineyards, Wolff Vineyards, Laetitia Vineyard & Winery, and Talley Vineyards are only a partial list of wineries and vineyards who have contributed over the years.
The artwork on the label is selected through an annual revolving artist competition. Each year, local artists of all ages and experience are encouraged to submit their artistic interpretation of “Mano Tinta.” The vibrant and creative labels from the past vintages have featured a variety of colorful images, inspired by vineyards, farm workers and the bounty of harvest. According to Talley Vineyards owner Brian Talley, “The idea for the art contest dates back to the first label, which was designed by Jose Juan Rico, the son of two of our employees, who lived near Talley Vineyards at that time. The artwork was so personal and powerful, it inspired the idea of an art contest to tap into the energy and inspiration of our local community year after year.”
The profit raised from the sales of this wine are donated to the Fund for Vineyard and Farm Workers; an endowment held at the Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County. The fund was created by Brian and Johnine Talley in 2004 to benefit organizations utilized by the vineyard and farm workers of San Luis Obispo County. The goal is to establish an endowment of $1 million so that this support can continue in perpetuity. Currently, the endowment is over $900,000. In 2017, The Fund for Vineyard and Farm Workers made grants of $30,000 to a number of organizations including the SLO Noor Foundation and Tolosa Children’s Dental Center. Most recently, a scholarship benefiting sons and daughters of San Luis Obispo County farm workers was created.
