An excerpt from the Thursday, October 2, 1930, Paso Robles Spotlight

Friendly policies of the Paso Robles Spotlight were vindicated again with the announcement today that the Paso Robles Union high school publication “The Bear Cat,” formerly “The Crimson and White,” is published by the Spotlight composing and press departments for the school. All work on the school paper is done by the students. The news content of the “Bear Cat” indicates good reportorial style and sets an example in school journalism. Editor-in-chief is John Trager, assistant editor, Ernestine Turner, business manager is Rayene Benadom.

The following are reporters on the Bear Cat staff:

Clarence Stuart, Vernon Sturgeon, Luther Simmons, Irving Gibbs, Conrad Wingefeld, Bob Merrill, Jean Sobey, Mary Agnes Phillips, Bee Glass, Betty Sobey, Grace Fabry, Paul Magnuson, Bill Yim, Alta Morgenson, Mary Merrill is Junior high reporter.

This “Looking Back” view at Paso Robles history comes from one of the hundreds of local newspapers in the Paso Robles Area Historical Society collection. Several local newspapers, dating from the 1800s, have reported on local, national and world events, providing priceless historical views of our community that are not available from any other source. The Historical Society is seeking community support for the multi-phased Newspaper Preservation Project to help fund the transfer of these aged and fragile pages to microfilm and digital images. See the society website for more information about becoming a member or donating to any phase of this project.

The Paso Robles Daily News is pleased to support this important project. Watch this space for future “Looking Back” articles.
