May ‘Focused Tasting’ event held at Caliza Winery
–Carl Bowker, proprietor, and winemaker of Caliza Winery, announces a special “focused tasting” event for the month of May. Caliza has been offering focused tastings by appointment only (in addition to the normal tasting room menu) for over a year and space fills quickly. Generally concentrating on a specific varietal or blend, comparing different vintages, the tastings are hosted by Bowker, or Caliza’s assistant winemaker Andy. This is a unique experience, emphasizing how different years produce distinctive variances in taste and structure of the grape. It is also exciting having the opportunity to taste wines that are generally no longer available.
Of the current tasting, Bowker says: “For our May Focused Tasting we are pulling out all the stops, and will be bringing in a fun ‘pot luck’ of some great wines from our library. We will be pouring our 2011 Azimuth (an enticing blend of grenache, syrah, mourvedre, petite sirah & tempranillo), our 2008 Companion (50-percent cabernet sauvignon, 38-percent syrah, and 12-percent tempranillo), our 2010 Cohort (60-percent syrah, 35-percent petite sirah and 5-percent grenache) plus our 2012 Reserve Syrah.” Bowker is excited to be pouring these wines from the library, as he comments: “Oh boy! These are some super special wines and I can’t wait to try them again myself, it’s been awhile, even for me.”
The focused tastings are relaxed, educational and fun, being great for the “wine geek” as well as the novice, in order to learn more while refining the pallet and experiencing differences between a variety of wines, varietals, blends and vintages. All of Caliza’s grapes are estate grown, and the wines consistently receive high ratings from various wine publications.
