New local gym opens with mission to give back

Give Fitness Health Club opens in Atascadero

Give FitnessThere’s a new gym in Atascadero and it’s about to change the way people think about working out. This new facility, Give Fitness Health Club, was established under the umbrella of its parent company: Working to GIVE. Their grand opening in Atascadero is slated for mid-January.

Matthew Holguin, 32, started Working to Give while completing his MBA at Azusa Pacific University in 2005. It was his intention to create a company that was purpose- driven rather than profit-driven. As a result, the Give model pre-allocates all profits for the various businesses that currently operate under the Working to Give umbrella.

Fifty percent of Give profits are donated back into the communities in which Give businesses operate. The other 50 percent are reinvested back into the business in order to sustain the company’s growth pattern. It is Give’s mission to provide life in its fullness for 100 countries over the next 20 years. Truly loving our neighbors as ourselves! Give businesses include food concessions at Disneyland, Colossal & Legendary Gelato, Aqua Free Waterless Carwash, The Stocking Project and, most recently, Give Fitness Health Club.

Friends become business partners

It was a series of random events and shared connections that led Matt to a meeting with Josh Donovan. The two connected immediately and saw an opportunity for partnership. Josh, 29, has been in the health and fitness industry for over 10 years. He identified some of the unique qualities of the market and, feeling that some needs were not presently being met, saw great opportunity for a new type of fitness product. The partnership with Give provides the resources necessary to bring a state of the art workout facility to downtown in addition to significant financial support for the community.

Giving back to the community

Give Fitness will carefully select individuals within the community to serve on a committee that will choose how the gym’s profits are distributed. If the facility can maintain approximately 2,500 active members, Give will be able to put roughly $100,000 per year back into the community. The process would include the committee identifying three major areas of need in the community at the end of each year and ultimately, members will vote on which project is selected.

Give operates and supports overseas businesses and orphanages. Josh has always had a heart for Atascadero and has been heavily involved in the community. It is very meaningful for both of them to be bringing the model right into their back yard.
