New six-week writing courses offered in North County

Aspiring writers are invited to join in a series of writing classes that begins Monday, Nov. 3, and features six distinct classes by local food and film critic and screenwriter, Teri Bayus. The courses are held at the Cuesta College North County Campus.

No class is a prerequisite to the other, and new students are welcome at any point. Each two-hour class includes a PowerPoint presentation, in class participation, at home assignments and writer assessment from the instructor. Each class is $30, the whole set is only $150. The courses are as follows:

Nov 3, 2014 – Writing Your Life’s Story: Learn how to get your most treasured memories written down for prosperity. Instruction includes plot, character, theme, and a step-by-step guide to writing your stories.

Nov 10, 2014 – Writer’s Tool Box: All the tools, skills and mindset you need to start your writing career. Instruction includes tricks and tips to keep writing, what to read, where to write and how to get your best prose out into the world.

Nov 17, 2014 – How to Write Strong Characters: This class teaches how to build a complete profile for each character and let them drive your plot.

Nov 24, 2014 – Will Write for Food: This class is held at a high end restaurant where students dine, taste wine pairings, talk with Chef and then write on the experience. Instruction includes submission and tips to write for local publications.

Dec 1, 2014 – Screenwriting for the Soul: Tips, ideas, tools, skill set and more to write your script and sell it to Hollywood or produce it yourself.

Dec 8, 2014 – Promoting Your Writing. Tips for blogging, magazine, e-publishing, and pitching your work. Instruction includes ideas for script distribution, agents, and marketing your published work.

Students can be anywhere in the writing process from beginner to published author to get new insights and tools to further their writing projects.

Teri Bayus is a screenwriter, teacher, food and film columnist, keynote speaker and humorist. She writes, teaches writing and marketing classes and runs non-profits.
