Hey there Paso Robles, hope everyone is staying dry and warm out there. While the rain is very much needed I know it tends to keep most people in, but don’t let it. As usual there is so much to get out and enjoy in Paso Robles and SLO County. Live music, which there is always plenty of here on the Central Coast, and plenty of other activities to get out and enjoy. The big thing to talk about this week is the SLO International Film Festival, which is going on now and running until March 10th. For more information on all of the events just go to http://www.slofilmfest.org. It had been awhile since I’d been, but Wednesday night I went to The Ranch in San Miguel for Comedy Night and had a blast. For those that aren’t aware, every Wednesday at The Ranch in San Miguel is comedy night. Some of the best comedians from Hollywood come up and put on some top notch stand up. So, if you’re looking for something to do during the middle of the week I highly suggest checking it out. Shows usually start around 8 PM and you can get there early and order supper as well. And now that Spring is here, don’t forget to change your time this weekend, Mondo Cellars in Paso Robles has started their Friday Night Sunset Hour back up. Now through the rest of the summer every Friday night can be enjoyed taking in the sunset at Mondo Cellars enjoying their wonderful wines and catered appetizers. There hasn’t been a whole lot to choose from at the movies the last couple of weeks, but a couple of new movies came out today, including “Oz The Great and Powerful” which I just got home from watching.
The Park Cinemas Picture of the Week: “Oz The Great and Powerful” (PG)

“Oz The Great and Powerful” is a great movie the whole family will enjoy. I love the original “Wizard of Oz”, I mean who doesn’t, so I was a little skeptical about how I felt about this prequel. With Sam Raimi directing and James Franco playing the wizard who is supported by the beautiful Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, “Oz The Great and Powerful” is just that; great and powerful. I saw it in 3-D, which I am not a fan of, but I must say this was probably the best 3-D I’ve seen since “Avatar”. Aside from the great story, which I will get to, the colors of the scenery are amazing! Also not a big fan of CGI, I prefer good old fashioned practical effects, but again I have to to say it was wonderfully done.
Now, to the story of “Oz The Great and Powerful”. In it we follow the life of Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig IsaacNorman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs, or better known as Oz . We open up with Oz working as a lowly magician in a traveling Circus who loves women and money. Not only does Oz trick and woo over his audiences with magic, he also has a thing for wooing and tricking women. Unfortunately he has wooed the wrong woman and her boyfriend is out to get him. While being chased, Oz manages to escape with his life via a hot air balloon. Just when he thinks he is in the safe and clear, he gets caught up in a tornado and crash lands in Oz. Not long after arriving in Oz, he meets three different witches and has to try and figure out who is really the good witch and who is the wicked one. They all tell him of the prophecy, in which a great wizard will save Oz from the wicked witch and in turn be awarded the throne of Emerald City and all its gold. He knows he is not the wizard they seek, but he will do whatever he is needed to get his hands on all of the gold. While battling to find out who is indeed the wicked witch and then take her down, Oz does become the great and powerful wizard, and more importantly, becomes a good man.

Clark Center for the Performing Arts:
SPRING CONCERT on March 9th at 7 PM
The young and talented members of the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony (SLOYS) will take the stage at the Clark Center once again for their annual Spring Concert. Featured in the performance will be 17 year old Youth Symphony violinist Joseph Wyer from Arroyo Grande. Earlier this season, Joseph competed in the annual SLOYS Concerto Competition with five other young musicians to win his place on the program. Joseph will be the violin soloist in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.4 in D minor performing with the SLOYS Concert Orchestra. Also featured on the program will be the SLOYS ensembles: Preparatory Strings, the Academy String Orchestra and the Symphonic Winds performing a variety of classical works including Benjamin Britten’s Matinee Musicales and Bach’s Little Fugue.
HANK & MY HONKY TONK HEROES on March 10th at 2 PM
Jason Petty began his renowned career as Hank Williams in 1996 and has never looked back! His uncanny likeness to Williams led to the starring role in the Off-Broadway hit “Hank Williams! Lost Highway,” which earned him the OBIE award for Best Actor. With a four-piece band, Jason now tours North America and Europe bringing Hank’s music back to life in the insightful and energetic show, Hank & My Honky Tonk Heroes. Jason “becomes” Williams in every sense as he leaves his audiences singing, clapping and toe-tapping to legendary hits. The NY Post said it best, “At times it seems as if Petty is not just offering an impersonation of Williams, but channeling his ghost.”
