Paul Coyne challenging Lois Capps in primary

Orcutt resident Paul Coyne visited Paso Robles recently in his bid to unseat incumbent Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara). Coyne, a self described conservative Democrat, is challenging Capps in next year’s primary election. The primary election for the 24th Congressional seat is June 3rd, 2014.

Candidate Paul Coyne

Coyne attended the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce holiday membership mixer at the new IQMS building on Wisteria Lane in Paso Robles.

He came to meet and greet voters, business leaders and members of the Paso Robles community. He also attended the annual downtown Christmas parade Dec. 7.

“I enjoyed meeting and speaking with dozens of voters about both local and national political issues,” Coyne said after the event. “There were dozens of business owners and local professionals from many industries from Paso Robles and surrounding areas enjoying the networking, cocktails, excellent local wines, great atmosphere, and high energy. Another great night in Paso Robles and an opportunity to meet more concerned and passionate voters. The evening included a very large turnout with a distinctive holiday, festive atmosphere.”

Coyne is a 40 year resident of the Central Coast. He graduated high school in 1981 at Goleta. He went on to attend the US Military Academy at West Point, serve in the US Army reserve, earn a BA in political science at UC Santa Barbara and an MA in political science at San Diego State University. He is a community volunteer with the United Way, Food Bank of Santa Barbara, and a member of the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce.

His work experience includes 20 years in the grocery industry and 10 years in banking. He currently is a bank branch manager and vice president for Union Bank in Santa Barbara County. He has not previously been elected to a public office.

Candidate Paul Coyne’s platform

JOBS FOR CALIFORNIA: With unemployment in California and across the nation still stubbornly high, new policies are needed to relieve small and medium-sized businesses from the tax and regulatory burdens which limit job creation. Paul would enact a one-year moratorium on new federal regulations while reviewing existing regulations to determine if they are actually helping or hurting our economy.

BALANCE THE BUDGET: Paul Coyne believes mainstream Democrats know that it is irresponsible and immoral to spend more than you take in. It is wrong to live on borrowed money and pass the debt on to our children and grandchildren. Paul supports a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution so that we can bring our $16 trillion national debt under control.

PROTECT TAXPAYERS: Paul Coyne does not believe the federal government should be using your tax dollars to bail out giant corporations or big banks. He opposed TARP and the auto bailout and wants to end taxpayer subsidies for big business. He supports making America’s tax system simpler and more equitable to middle class families by reducing rates while eliminating loopholes and deductions which benefit the wealthy.

SOCIAL SAFETY NET: Paul Coyne believes we can be fiscally responsible without sacrificing the needs of our seniors and the truly needy. He will work to preserve Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid while making the necessary reforms to keep these programs solvent for future generations.

BRING THEM HOME: Paul Coyne believes that a large part of our debt problem can be attributed to needless wars and out-of-control military spending. $5 trillion was spent on the quicksand wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Americans are no safer. Do we need to spend more money on the military than all the nations of the world combined? Do we still need troops and bases in 130 countries? Paul will get control of federal spending by making real cuts to the military-industrial complex. C

IVIL RIGHTS: In the proud tradition of the Democratic Party, Paul embraces full and equal rights for all Americans, regardless of race or gender. This includes enforcing equal pay for equal work laws, funding the Violence Against Women Act, and ratification of the ERA. He favors repeal of those sections of the Patriot Act and the NDAA which violate the Bill of Rights.

CHANGE CONGRESS: With Congress possibly the least-respected political institution in the nation, Paul wants to make major reforms. These includes term limits for all members of Congress, an end to earmarks and congressional pensions, and a requirement that members actually read the bills they are voting on.
