Planning Commission considering new 163-bed assisted living facility

Sommerset on Golden Hill

The Paso Robles Planning Commission is meeting next Tuesday evening to consider a proposal for a new 163-bed assisted living facility. The project is planned at 2450 Golden Hill Road, south of Union Road, near the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Paso Robles.

Rick Beasley with Summerset Assisted Living has submitted an application to the city for the new 140,000 square-foot facility on an 11.8-acre site. The new project would replace a proposed 175-bed Golden Hill Retirement facility, approved by the city in 2008.

The new project includes two individual two-story buildings, one which provides for assisted living residents and the other for residents with dementia and memory care needs. The assisted living building has a footprint of 46,650 square feet and the memory care building has a footprint of 31,864 square feet. The facility will be supported by ancillary common facilities such as outdoor landscaped courtyards, physical therapy center, library and computer areas, theatre and game room, and walking trails.

The Summerset project has been designed with a rural-agrarian style of architecture. The architectural style combines vertical and horizontal elements, focusing on wood beams, grains and textures suggestive of a mountain lodge or farm-home style. Exterior siding materials include a combination of hard-board siding, stucco siding, and stone and brick veneer accents. Roof materials consist of a composition shingle for the main roof and a standing seam metal for the covered balcony/covered porch.

The parking lot for the project has been designed to accommodate 82 parking spaces. Summerset has indicated they will have sufficient parking since the parking will primarily be used by visitors and staff. Additional parking needs are represented by the small percentage of residents at the facility who drive as well as the bus and vanpool services provided to residents to get to doctor appointments, shopping, and local events.
