The night after the fireworks of the Fourth of July, a more spontaneous display of patriotism took place at McPhee’s Grill in Templeton.

McPhee’s staff reports that 10 U.S. soldiers from the 368th Engineer Battalion of New England arrived at the local steakhouse for dinner on Saturday night. As the host walked them to their table, the whole dining room erupted in cheers and saluted the soldiers for at least five minutes. Three separate McPhee’s customers proceeded to volunteer to pay for part of the group’s bill, and McPhee’s Grill decided to cover the remainder of the charges.

“It was truly amazing to see this kind of support for our troops,” says Ian McPhee. “I was proud of our community for the moving gesture, and happy to be able to follow suit and offer a token of my appreciation to these soldiers for their service to our country.”

Owned and operated by chef-pastry chef, husband-wife team Ian and June McPhee, McPhee’s Grill has been featured in Sunset Magazine and Westways Magazine and has been serving Templeton and the greater North San Luis Obispo County, CA area since 1994. McPhee’s Grill offers fine wine and fine dining, with a seasonal menu that showcases the bounty of fresh, local produce, meat and fish grown, raised and caught on the fertile Central Coast.
