Update from Paso Robles Skills USA

To our business, industry and community sponsors,

Paso Robles High School students and advisors are disappointed not to have the State and National Conferences, however we understand this decision. It is especially a disappointment for our Seniors who have competed in SkillsUSA during their High School experience. Due to the Covid-19 virus and school closures, the California SkillsUSA State Director attempted to find a virtual solution to holding the conference. However, it became apparent this would be a difficult solution for many of the contestants. The SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference has made the decision to cancel the National Leadership & Skills Conference in June 2020.

PRHS had qualified 107 students to attend the state conference scheduled for April 16-19, 2020. Several of these 107 were Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists at the Region 2 conference. held on Feb. 22, 2020.

This year the Regional Medalists will be given their Region 2 Medals upon their return to school. PRHS students earned: 33 Gold Medals, 28 Silver Medals, 13 Bronze Medals. These Medalists represent 58% of our students attending. Those students who earned the “Advance To State” (eligible) to attend the State SkillsUSA Conference April 16-19, 2020 represent 82% of the PRHS students attending the Region 2 Conference. Many of the students competed as individuals, however, there were 11 Teams (competitors in teams of 2 – 4 students) that medaled.

Many of our sponsors are aware that their financial donations are the reason PRHS is able to have such a robust SkillsUSA program. Without sponsors we would not have the financial ability to involve such a large number of students at the regional, state and national conferences. Your contributions pay for the transportation cost to attend Region 2 conference located in Bakersfield, CA. Over half of the cost for students transportation, housing, and registration to attend the state conference in Ontario, CA, and three-quarters the cost to attend the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY.

Disappointing as it may be we recognize the bigger picture for the health and welfare of our next generation of the U.S. workforce. To that end, we are committed to begin the 2020-2021 school year in August 2020 with SkillsUSA as a vital piece of the education PRHS students receive. Therefore know that your donations will strengthen next year’s PRHS SkillsUSA program.

Replacing the Sponsor Appreciation Dinner in May, we will be taking an ad in the Paso Robles Press honoring our Region 2 Medalist and our Sponsors.

We appreciate all you do for SkillsUSA Chpt. 211,

Randy Canaday
