Virg’s Landing reports biggest lingcod caught to date

Angler Tony Laurenco of Morro Bay with the biggest lingcod caught all year of out Virg’s Landing.

Virg’s Landing reports biggest lingcod of the year was caught recently, weighing in at 38 lbs. 6 oz. The angler is Tony Laurenco of Half Moon Bay.

The fish was caught on the first day of a 2 day trip on the Princess, which left on Saturday, Dec. 27. It was caught on a diamond jig above Piedras Blancas lighthouse, Cape San Martin area. The total fish count for that trip was 101 lingcod, 470 red rockfish and 50 assorted rockfish for 26 anglers

The Black Pearl ran an overnight trip that left Friday night Dec. 26. Again, they were up north, in the same area, and the big fish was a 33 lbs. 2 oz. lingcod. The angler was Ed Martin of Visalia, CA. On that trip, 25 anglers got 50 lingcod, 99 red rockfish and 40 assorted rockfish.

On Sunday, Dec. 28, Virg’s Landing had three boats go out on day trips. The Fiesta ran on a 6 to 4, and the Rita G and Black Pearl both ran 8 to 2 trips. There were a total of 60 anglers on those three boats, and they got 60 lingcod, 273 red rockfish, 383 assorted rockfish, 2 cabezon, 3 kelp greenling, 1 rock sole and 1 bonito.

The biggest fish from those 3 trips was a 12 lb 10 oz lingcod, caught by Joel Switer of Santa Margarita.
