Zurn Wilkins employees take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Zurn Wilkins employees in Paso Robles recently took up this summer’s national craze, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, raising over $1,400 to be used for medical research.

About 75 Zurn Wilkins associates participated in the fundraising efforts, culminating in a group ice bucket dump on company property. A video of the event, involving more than 200 lbs. of ice, is posted on YouTube.

Miranda Schmidt, senior marketing content specialist for Zurn, oversees the monthly Zurn Wilkins Community Involvement events that raise money for, or otherwise assist, a wide variety of charitable causes. She says the idea for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge came from Luis Garibay, who works in the Zurn Wilkins shipping department.

“We always like to listen to our associates for a wide range of suggestions,” Schmidt says. “When Luis gave us the idea for this event, we knew instantly it would be a hit with everyone.”

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. For more information, visit:
