Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian considers running for US Congress

Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian (R-Arroyo Grande) is considering a run for US Congress, according to the assemblyman’s Chief of Staff Ross Buckley. Achadjian is also considering a run for California State Senate, although nothing is official yet. “He is weighing his options right now,” Buckley said. Achadjian will be termed-out of his spot as an Assemblyman in 2016.

“I have not filed papers with the county clerk to officially run for any office,” Achadjian said. “I am keeping all of my options open right now and I am in the process of deciding my future political plans.”

If Achadjian were to run for Congress, he would be vying for the spot currently held by Lois Capps (R-Santa Barbara), to represent the 24th District which includes San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, as well as the Los Padres National Forest located in Ventura County. Capps has been serving as congresswoman since 1998.

If Achadjian were to run for State Senate, he would be vying for the seat that Bill Monning (D-Carmel) currently occupies. Monning represents the 17th District, which includes Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo Counties in their entirety, as well as portions of Monterey and Santa Clara Counties. The cities include: Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Gilroy, San Luis Obispo, Morgan Hill, Seaside, Paso Robles, Atascadero, Monterey, and other smaller cities.

Achadjian was sworn in for his third two-year term on December 1, 2014, to represent the 35th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of: Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria.

No matter which direction he chooses, he said that he remains, “committed to serving the residents of the Central Coast” in his current position.
