Assistance League receives grants from local foundations
– Two local foundations recently provided grants to help Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County provide new, school-appropriate clothing to Kindergarten through 12th grade low-income students who live in and attend schools in San Luis Obispo County.
For several years, the Robert H. Janssen Foundation has made a contribution to the league’s Operation School Bell program including this year’s $5,000 grant.
First time donor, Midland Pacific Foundation stepped forward with a matching grant for $5,000. Together these two foundations will enable assistance league members to help approximately 100 local students select new school outfits at a local retail store.
At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, assistance league volunteers will meet with school personnel to issue clothing referrals. Assistance league has budgeted funding to clothe 1,400 disadvantaged students. The schools determine which students are most in need of clothing for school.
Volunteers then meet students on their appointed date at Kohl’s in Paso Robles or Old Navy in San Luis Obispo. The goal is to clothe as many students as can be arranged in August and September so they will have sufficient clothing as they start back to school. It has been reported by school personnel and families that the students served by assistance league have better school attendance and have improved academically.
