The Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team beat the Cajon Cowboys 31-28 to improve to a 4-0 season record. The Bearcats scored on their first possession to go up 7-0, but the lead changed repeatedly. At halftime, the Bearcats led 20-16. The score remained close throughout the game.

Christian Erickson ran the ball well for the Bearcats, but the Bearcat defense had difficulty stopping sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels and senior running back Nicolas Wilson.

Special teams played a big role in the Bearcats victory. Kicker and punter Cade England blasted nearly every kick-off into the end zone for a touchback. He punted the ball effectively, too, repeatedly pinning the Cowboys deep in their own territory. Jonathan Jaimes kicked a 43-yard field goal. Three points ultimately became the margin of victory.

The lead changed several times in the third and fourth quarters. The Cowboys outscored the Bearcats 12-3 in the third quarter. But the Bearcat defense held the Cowboys scoreless in the fourth quarter. Holding a 38-33 advantage in the 4th quarter, the Cowboys drove downfield with fewer than 4 minutes to play. Blake Adame intercepted a Cowboy pass inside the Bearcats five yard line. Two plays later, Seth Matthysse caught a pass from Steve Schouten, advancing the ball from the Bearcats 2-yard line to the Cowboys’ 26. The Bearcats Christian Erickson scored and made the 2-point conversion to give the Bearcats a 31-28 lead.

The defense held for the final minute and the Bearcats prevailed. They improve to 4-0 for the season. The Cowboys suffered their first loss. They’re now 2-1.

On Friday, Bearcats host Clovis North Broncos at War Memorial Stadium. Coach Rich Shimke says Clovis North may be the toughest opponent the Bearcats have faced this season.
