The city of Paso Robles will host an event to honor civil rights champion Martin Luther King Jr. The event coincides with King’s birthday and the federal holiday in his honor. It will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Centennial Banquet Room, 600 Nickerson Drive in Paso Robles. King, who died in 1968 would have turned 85 on Jan. 15.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Together Because of the Dream, Our Community Walks as One.” The event will feature speakers Donna Cheek, an equestrian and KCBX radio contributor.

Local performers include bagpipe player Ed Gallagher, Ballet Folklorico Cachanilla and the God Squad Dance Crew. This year’s celebration will also feature the newly created Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir which is comprised of singers from several local groups. The Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation will perform a drama presentation.

The event is free, but organizers will be collecting donations for Loaves & Fishes in Paso Robles. For more information, call Sharon Williams at 237-4737.
