Earth Day food and wine fest celebrates 8th year

Earth Day Food and Wine
–Some 1,500 food and wine tasters came out Saturday to Castoro Cellars to celebrate the 8th Annual Earth Day Food & Wine Weekend.

“It was a really beautiful day out in the meadow at Castoro Cellars,” said Kris Beal, executive director of The Vineyard Team, which produces the event. “We were thrilled at how the day went,” she said.

About 200 chefs, restaurants, caterers, wineries and other vendors came out on the sunny afternoon to share their tastes and treats under huge tents set up for the event. Treats included seasonal produce, grass-fed meats, artisanal cheeses, local olive oils, and even some Central Coast chocolate. The Damon Castillo band provided entertainment. The event was supported by over 100 volunteers.

Since it’s celebrating Earth Day, organizers made a commitment to host a zero-waste event, where everything used was recyclable or compostable. The sound stage was powered by the sun, compliments of Pacific Energy Company.

The Earth Day Food & Wine Weekend is a benefit that supports farmworker education and sustainable ag research conducted by the Vineyard Team, a non-profit organization. The Vineyard Team is a collaboration of growers, wineries, consultants, researchers, and natural resource professionals dedicated to promoting sustainable winegrape growing on California’s Central Coast.

The event moved this year from Pomar Junction Winery to Castoro Cellars. Beal says organizers are very pleased with the new venue and already have plans for the 2015 celebration to be at Castoro.
