Fatal collision on Highway 101 in Atascadero

car crash–A fatal collision occurred at approximately 2.55 a.m. this morning on Highway 101, just north of the Santa Barbara Road exit in Atascadero, according to California Highway Patrol. The male driver who was alone in the vehicle, died as a result of the collision.

The driver was in a green Chevy 1500 pickup truck and overcorrected the vehicle when it drifted into the center median strip, according to CHP. The driver lost control of the vehicle which spun and impacted the raised roadway edge curb, causing the car to become airborne and ejecting the driver from the car onto the freeway shoulder.

The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision, according to CHP. The incident is under investigation and CHP will be conducting a 24 hour driver profile to determine further factors in the accident.
