North County honors veterans

–North County honored those who have served at Veterans Day ceremonies held in Atascadero and Paso Robles Friday.

The Commander VFW Post 10965 Salvador Cota was the Master of Ceremonies of the event held at the Paso Robles Cemetery. The invocation was given by Chaplain Major Vaugh Brenner of Fort Hunter Liggett. The local girl scouts and boy scouts led the pledge of allegiance.

Frank Mecham gave the welcome speech, and the guest speaker for the day was Staff Judge Advocate LTC Charmaine Betty-Singleton of Fort Hunter Liggett.

Majorie Hamon once again led the crowd in singing a number of patriotic songs, and the Estrella War Birds held their traditional flyover. The ceremony finished with a closing prayer by Chaplain Brenner, the VFW Post 10965 American Legion Post 50 Sons of the American Legion honor guard and a playing of TAPS.

In Atascadero, Dick Mason was Master of Ceremonies for the event held at the Faces of Freedom Memorial. The event included guest speaker, USAF Vietnam Veteran George Marrett, a performance of, “Blue Skies,” by Atascadero High School Show Choir student Andrée Zavala, and also a traditional flyover by the Estrella Warbirds.

Two Veteran of the Year awards were presented to Charlie Harber USAAC WWll, and Joesph Hale USMC WWll, and 24 quilts were given out during a Quilts of Valor presentation.
