Paso Robles Art Association awards scholarships to Cuesta students

– The Paso Robles Art Association recently gave scholarships to two art students from Cuesta College. The association is, “a community of artists and art lovers who enjoy the opportunity to engage the greater community in art interactively through exhibitions, classes, workshops and local festivals.”

The 2015 scholarship recipients are Brittani Taylor and Miriam Orozco Ramirez. These young artists will also receive complimentary student memberships in the art association.

Brittani Taylor is from Paso Robles and is attending Cuesta College. She said that she realized that when she did not include an art course in her studies, she wasn’t happy. Switching to a major in art, she is complimenting her studio studies with digital art.

Miriam Orozco Ramirez is from Atascadero. She is attending the University of California at Davis. She intends to pursue a master’s degree in art therapy. In her thank you note she wrote, “. . . Art has influenced my life because it has inspired me to open my imagination, talents and skills. It has also unlocked many insecurities which encouraged me to pickup a paintbrush and paint without fear. . . .”

Cuesta College administered the scholarship program by advertising for applicants, sorting through the applications, and picking the recipients based on the criteria stipulated by the association for the visual arts.

One way the association is able to fund scholarships is through events like Arte de Tiza. On Sept. 19 Paso Robles City Park was filled with over 100 people, both children and adults, creating chalk paintings. The event raised over $3,300 for scholarships. Volunteers from both the art association membership and the Optimist Club made Arte de Tiza a success.

Sponsors donating this year included Union Bank, Thaddeus Sherman Masonic Lodge, Optimist Club, Rita’s Rainbows, Walmart, Susan Naughton and businesses around the park.

The association offers rotating juried exhibitions of member’s work in the Studios on the Park Showroom Gallery, Thursdays through Sundays. For more information, go to www.pasoroblesartassociation.org.
