Six area agencies come together for CERT training

Five North County fire agencies and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department are joining together to host the North County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training that will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The training will run for four consecutive Wednesdays from 6 to 9:15 p.m. at the Paso Robles Emergency Services Center, located at 900 Park St. A final hands-on drill will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, followed by a barbecue and diploma ceremony.

According to North County CERT Program Manager Jim Fritsche, the training will offer people from this area a chance to learn preparedness and disaster-handling skills. “Please join the hundreds of North County residents that have already completed this training,” Fritsche wrote.

The course is taught following the 20-hour, Department of Homeland Security-approved guidelines. According to CERT’s website, taking the classes will make a world of difference in how people through the next major disaster. All graduating students will receive a CERT gear bag with basic emergency equipment to aid themselves, family, neighbors and others during a time of need. North County residents have the opportunity be prepared through education, training, and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters of all kinds. CERT was selected as one of the primary programs offered by the Department of Homeland Security.
