SLO woman found guilty of vehicular manslaughter

    Update posted July 18, 2018

–On Thursday, a San Luis Obispo jury found 25-year old Jessica Lea Allred guilty of vehicular manslaughter for driving intoxicated on Highway 58 and causing the death of Santa Margarita resident Denise Fox in April 2016.

Though jurors convicted Jessica Lea Allred of the manslaughter charge, they rejected the District Attorney’s Office’s more serious charge of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, instead finding that she acted with “ordinary negligence.”

Allred, who lived in San Luis Obispo at the time of the crash, was initially facing up to 10 years in prison. It is not clear yet what total time she faces. Reports say her attorney, Patrick Fisher, calculated her maximum sentence at roughly four years, Deputy District Attorney Chase Martin said it could be roughly seven years.

–Denise Lyn Fox, 56, of Santa Margarita, was reportedly killed in a head-on car crash just east of Santa Margarita in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday. The collision occurred at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday near the area of Highway 58 and W. Pozo Road.

Fox was reportedly driving a Toyota sedan eastbound about a half mile outside Santa Margarita when a car driven by 23-year-old San Luis Obispo resident Jessica Lea Allred, crossed the double yellow lines and crashed head on into Fox. Fox was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency personnel transported Allred, who was suffering from a broken leg and two broken ankles, to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. CHP officers then placed Allred under arrest for DUI at the hospital, reports say.

A GoFundMe account was set up to cover the costs of her final wishes.
