Satirical street poster artist featured at Cuesta art gallery

6 KNUCKLEHEADS

Opening reception to be hosted Jan. 22

– Guerilla poster artist Robbie Conal is showcasing a series of posters and paintings in Cuesta College’s Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery in an exhibit running through Feb. 19. The exhibit, titled “So Many Bad Guys, So Little Time: Robbie Conal’s Satirical Street Posters (Plus a Dozen Knuckleheads)” will include an opening reception on Jan. 22 from 4 – 7 p.m. in the Miossi Art Gallery. An artist talk with Conal, a Los Osos resident, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

In 1986, Conal began making satirical oil portraits of politicians and bureaucrats and turning them into street posters. Over the past 24 years, Conal has made more than 80 street posters satirizing various politicians, televangelists and global capitalists. He has also taken on the topics of censorship, war, social injustice, and environmental issues.

The main emphasis of Conal’s Miossi Gallery exhibit is on his politically inspired work. The show features a wall of, “funny, outrageous, satirically biting posters.”

“My paintings are intended as satirical counter-infotainment,” said Conal. “If they tickle people into thinking along with me about social and political issues, I’m a happy man.”
