School district’s free lunch program serving over 1,000 a day
–The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District served 1061 hot lunches and breakfasts Tuesday after moving the free lunch program from four to just two locations. Parents and students drove through meal pick-up operations at Paso Robles High School and the Culinary Arts Academy.
Food Services Director Joey Vaughn said, “To make the program sustainable we moved to the two locations where we have enough ovens to prepare the meals for the students.”
When the program first started a week ago, they served lunches at each of four locations; Winifred Pifer Elementary School, Georgia Brown Elementary School, Flamson Middle School, and Paso Robles High School. Staffing all four locations became challenging and as the number of meals grew at each location, the quantity exceeded the capacity at some of those facilities. Tuesday, the district reduced the program to just the two locations. Joey Vaughn said it went well.
Similar programs are being done at school districts throughout San Luis Obispo County.
