Letter: Instead of complaining about imaginary rights, help us all get through this crisis

Letter to the editor paso robles daily news

    Dear editor,

–You have published two letters in recent days from readers claiming some ill-defined constitutional rights of theirs have been trampled by current or purposed restrictions imposed by local or state authorities trying to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Let us be clear about this. You do not have the right to infect your fellow citizens with a serious, possibly fatal, disease. You do not have the right to purchase a gun whenever you want.

The government’s ability to impose temporary quarantines to halt pandemics and its ability to limit gun sales have been litigated, decided, and approved by numerous court cases across the land. A reasonable time spent researching these issues would have revealed this.

Instead of whining about non-existent, imaginary rights, please channel your attention to helping us all get through this crisis. At least in the case of the shelter-at-home program, your insistence on exercising these so-called “rights” may cost someone else their life.
