Caltrans replacing Toro Creek, Old Creek bridges on Highway 1

    – Caltrans announced this week that projects to replace Toro Creek and Old Creek Bridges on Highway 1 in Cayucos have received $2.5 million in federal infrastructure funding and more than $26 million in funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

Construction began in May to demolish and replace the northbound bridges located within a two-mile segment of Highway 1. The new bridges will comply with current earthquake, hydraulic and structural standards.

Temporary two-way traffic on the southbound lanes remains in place during the construction of both locations.

Toro Creek Bridge has a total cost of $17.9 million, which includes $1.2 million in federal funds and $11.8 million in SB 1 funds. Old Creek Bridge has a total cost of $16 million, including $1.3 million in federal funds and $14.4 million in SB 1 funds.bridge replacement 1

“These bridge projects were able to become shovel-ready because of the availability of federal funds for these regional transportation projects. This funding source is important to advance our work on the Central Coast,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

The contractor for Toro Creek Bridge project is Souza Construction, Inc. of San Luis Obispo, and the contractor for the Old Creek Bridge project is Papich Construction of Arroyo Grande.

Both projects are expected to be completed in the Spring of 2023, weather permitting.bridge replacement 2

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones. For traffic updates on other state highways in San Luis Obispo County, travelers may contact Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at (805) 549-3318 or can visit the Caltrans District 5 website.
