Paso Robles celebrates Arbor Day
Volunteers hand out 125 oak trees & drought-tolerant plants
Celebrating Arbor Day and as part of the City of Paso Robles’ 125th anniversary celebration, volunteers were on hand from Noon-6 p.m. on Friday near the gazebo in the downtown city park handing free oak trees and drought-tolerant plants.
“This event was the brainchild of Councilman Steve Martin,” said Julie Dahlens, director of library and recreation services for the city. “He suggested that we use some of the oak tree replacement funds that the city collects to purchase trees and distribute them in the community so they can be planted in honor of our 125th anniversary.”
Many that stopped by to pick up one of the 125 trees and plants left donations, with proceeds going towards the 125th anniversary celebration events taking place throughout the year.
Greg Ellis of One Cool Earth, students of Liberty High School’s GreenWorks Nursery, Gary Perruzzi of the Paso Robles REC Foundation and staff from Althouse and Meade, Inc. Biological and Environmental Services were on hand to offer advice regarding planting, watering and maintenance.
“The oak tree is very iconic for Paso Robles,” said Dahlens, “and to be able to give trees to the community and visualize them being planted is so meaningful.”
