Grand jury finds legal cannabis has ‘not been economically viable’ for SLO County
Grand jury releases report on county’s cannabis industry
– The San Luis Obispo County Grand Jury released a report titled “Growing Pains: The Cannabis Industry in San Luis Obispo County,” examining the development of the cannabis industry in the unincorporated areas of the county. The report focused on areas under the sole jurisdiction of the Board of Supervisors and used information from municipalities within the county and neighboring counties for comparison.
The investigation did not extend to examining ordinances for each local jurisdiction.
The report states that the legal cannabis industry has not provided financial benefits to San Luis Obispo County and has negatively impacted the county’s general fund. Despite the legalization of cannabis, illegal cannabis activity persists.
The jury concluded that legal cannabis has not been economically viable for San Luis Obispo County but suggested that it can and should provide benefits to communities where it is allowed.
The full transcript of reports, along with information on how to apply to become a juror and the citizen complaint form, is available at slo.courts.ca.gov/general-information/jury-service/grand-jury.
