Specs by Kyla opened in 2021 during the pandemic
– Specs by Kyla, an optical shop in downtown Atascadero, is celebrating its third anniversary this month. Kyla Skinner opened the shop on July 5, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to provide unique and stylish eyewear options in North County. The shop sells prescription eyewear and sunglasses, focusing on independent brands from Europe and the United States.
The business quickly gained popularity, with customers appreciating the personalized service and the wide selection of over 600 styles of eyewear, including non-prescription sunglasses. “You looking good in your eyewear is the best business card I could ever have, everyone will ask you where you got your glasses!” Skinner said. Since opening, Skinner has fitted over 1,800 frames for the local community.
Certified by the American Board of Opticians since 1996, Skinner stays current on eyewear trends by attending trade shows in Milan and Paris. She sources new styles and brands to keep her shop’s offerings fresh and stylish.
Skinnerhas donated over $5,000 to non-profits supporting adoption and foster care, including Seneca SLO County and Family Care Network. In 2023, she was recognized as the Woman of Influence by the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce for her community contributions.
Recently, Skinner’s husband, Jeff, joined the team to manage bookkeeping and back-office tasks, allowing her to focus on customer service. Specs by Kyla operates by appointment to provide individualized attention.
