Unique animals and birds that can be seen in California

Even though California is the leader in terms of population, this state has much space for wildlife. Here, it is the most diverse and unlike nature in other places in the USA. Among the many animals and birds, California has several unique species that cannot be seen in any other state. Let’s take a closer look at them and assess how these living creatures have adapted to life in the local ecosystem.

    Tule elk

This unique animal was on the verge of extinction 150 years ago. Thanks to the efforts of caring people, it was possible to save the species and spread it throughout California. Tule elk is not found in other states yet, but it may appear there sooner or later. Today, the smallest known subspecies of North American moose can be seen in California’s national parks. It is best to look for it using AGM thermal imaging devices and similar optics. This is because Tule elk usually lives in dense thickets, so it will be difficult to determine its location without auxiliary devices. The animal searches for food in these places and often hides its offspring from predators. Today, the Tule elk continues to fight for survival. Scientists and representatives of environmental organizations consider the situation under control, so they give the species an excellent chance to continue to thrive.

    California newt

This tiny amphibian lives exclusively in California. It stands out for its unusual coloring, which mixes orange and brown. The main feature of this newt is the ability to secrete a toxin that is dangerous to humans. In its composition, it resembles the poison of the world-famous puffer fish. Due to its small size, seeing the California newt will be very difficult. It is best to look for it during the rainy season, which is the most favorable for the species. During this period, the animals emerge from their shelters and head to small backwaters formed near various bodies of water. Most often, the California newt comes into human sight in Mendocino County and near the Santa Ana Range.

    San Francisco garter snake

The San Francisco garter snake is one of the most unusual reptiles in the world. It is beautiful, combining shades of red, blue and black. It is thanks to this that this snake is easily distinguished from others. Its habitat is California. It is not found in other states and countries. Today, finding such a snake in the wild will be extremely difficult. To do this, you should go to the freshwater bodies of San Francisco and look for swampy places near them. There is also a chance to see a unique animal in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. The San Francisco garter snake is on the verge of extinction. The reason for this is human activity and the fact that its main prey is a rare frog species, which various conservation organizations protect.

    Valley elderberry longhorn beetle

This unique invertebrate has been fighting for its existence for many years. It lives on elderberry bushes, where it finds food and a suitable place to develop larvae. People have long considered these plants harmful and destroyed them in huge quantities. This put the beetle on the brink of extinction, and today, the situation has not improved. To see a rare insect that does not live outside of California, you need to go to the forests of the Central Valley. You should look for perennial elderberry bushes suitable for the Valley elderberry longhorn beetle. Most often, they will be located near small streams or in places where there are underground springs. Having found a suitable location, you can begin searching for the red-black insect and hope for the successful completion of this mission.

    California clapper rail

This small wading bird is one of the species that may disappear shortly. It lives exclusively in California, inhabiting thickets located near various wetlands. Today, the clapper rail is found only in Morro Bay, San Francisco Bay, and other places between these bodies of water. The difficult situation with the distribution of this bird is associated with human activity. People have destroyed almost all the territories suitable for it and also used the clapper rail as food for many years. The situation has improved a little but has not yet become ideal. To see this unique Californian bird, you need to have good hearing. It makes characteristic sounds that are difficult to confuse with the cries of other birds.

    Golden trout

Among the many inhabitants of California’s water bodies, the most interesting is the Golden trout. It is a relative of the familiar rainbow trout found in many bodies of water in the United States. What makes the fish unique is its unconventional golden color. Until now, scientists have been unable to determine how and where it came from. Golden trout behaves in much the same way as other trout. It lives in fast, cold streams at least 6.5 thousand feet above sea level. You need to go to the Kern River to see the Golden trout. Only in this place in California is it possible to find this fish. Today, it is on the verge of extinction, and scientists give disappointing forecasts, so we advise you to hurry if you want to see this unique aquatic inhabitant with your own eyes.

California is amazed by the diversity of animals and birds living on its territory. Some are so rare that they are found only in this state. Each of these unique living creatures is a wonderful creation of nature and deserves a place on our planet. By protecting them, we can preserve the ecosystem that has been forming for thousands of years and protect wildlife from humans’ negative impact.
