Juvenile driver arrested in felony hit and run

Juvenile driver loses control, crashes Camaro in North County

    – The California Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run collision that occurred on Aug. 11 at 1:08 a.m. on River Road at Wellsona Road in North County.

A 15-year-old juvenile from Paso Robles was driving a 2013 Chevy Camaro northbound on River Road at approximately 80 to 90 mph. The driver approached a turn at an unsafe speed and was unable to slow the vehicle in time, resulting in a loss of control. The Camaro drove off the paved roadway and overturned several times across a grass field, sustaining major rollover damage.

The driver and a right front passenger sustained minor injuries, such as cuts and abrasions, and fled the scene without rendering aid to the rear passenger. The rear passenger, identified as 22-year-old Raul Santiago Cortez, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. He was transported by San Luis Ambulance to Sierra Vista Medical Center for treatment.

Following further investigation, the driver and right-front passenger were located and provided statements regarding the crash. The driver was subsequently arrested and charged with felony hit and run. The driver was admitted into San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall.

The crash remains under investigation, and it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
