Bearcats break through in final minutes to defeat Rams
– The Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team secured their first win of the season on the road against the Garces Memorial Rams on Friday, with a final score of 7-0 at Garces Memorial in Bakersfield.
After a tough loss against Kingsburg in their season opener, 45-6, the Bearcats rebuilt their momentum to take down the Rams in a closely contested game, breaking a scoreless tie late in the fourth quarter. In a tightly contested first half, the Paso Robles Bearcats and the Garces Memorial Rams remained locked in a defensive standoff, with neither team able to find the end zone, leaving the score tied at 0-0 by halftime.
The Bearcats began the game with a 10-yard rush down the middle by junior running back Kassim Williams, but a holding penalty quickly set them back, and the Ram’s defense stopped their attempts to gain ground.
After several rushing attempts, the Bearcats were forced to punt on their opening possession. The Rams struggled similarly, unable to get the ball to their goal line.
Late in the first quarter, the Bearcats had the opportunity to capitalize after a blocked punt left them at the 15-yard line near their goal. However, they failed to score, as the ball fumbled on fourth down, turning it over to Garces Memorial.
The Rams opened the second quarter with possession but were unable to convert on fourth down, returning the ball back to the Bearcats. Unable to break through the Rams’ defensive line, the Bearcats were forced to punt once again.
With neither team reaching the end zone in a scoreless first half, the Bearcats and Rams headed into the locker rooms looking to make critical adjustments. The defensive battle between the Bearcats and the Rams continued well into the second half.
The Bearcat’s defense kept the Ram’s offense in check, with a crucial sack early in the third quarter setting the tone. As the game moved into the fourth quarter, the score remained 0-0.
With the Rams in possession deep in their territory, the Bearcats’ defense held firm. A pass deflected by junior defensive back Kyler Weyrich prevented the Rams from gaining any traction. Despite their efforts, the Bearcats faced setbacks, including a strip and fumble recovery by the Rams on third and short with 7:28 remaining.
The Bearcats regained possession of the ball, and a well-executed pass to junior wide receiver Tre Clark put the Bearcats within striking distance of their goal.
After being stopped twice, the Bearcats faced fourth and goal when a nine-yard pass was completed to Jonathan Druding in the end zone, putting the Bearcats on the scoreboard at 6-0 with just 1:29 remaining in the game.
The PAT was successful, adding the extra point and extending the Bearcats’ lead 7-0.
With the clock winding down, the Rams failed to move the ball and ultimately fell short of converting on the fourth and ten, giving the Bearcats the win.
The Paso Robles High School Bearcats aim to build on their momentum as they return home for their first home game on Friday, Sept. 6, at War Memorial Stadium, where they will face off against Madera High School at 7 p.m.
